Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island date palm, not to be confused with the ordinary date palm) is a statuesque evergreen palm. It bears long arching feather-shaped dark green leaves and drooping panicles of creamy-yellow flowers over a stout chunky trunk – a fabulous architectural statement in any location.
Large frost tender evergreen shrub. Plant in a large container in John Innes No 2 or good multi-purpose compost in a sunny sheltered spot outside in summer and overwinter in a conservatory or greenhouse. Renew compost annually. RHS Award of Garden Merit.
