Welcome
2 ½ miles west of Hereford on the A438 Brecon Road, Hereford Garden Centre holds an iconic status in the garden centre industry. In 1932 the seeds of Wyevale were sown here, and in a 5 acre rose field owned by local nurseryman Harry Williamson. One of the pioneers of container grown plants in Britain , he experimented with growing roses in reject tins from the nearest jam factory ultimately enabling gardeners to buy and plant trees and shrubs year round; until then, planting was effectively limited to bare rooted stock in autumn and winter. The British garden centre industry was revolutionised and the rest, as they say, is history.
By 1966 the Wyevale Nursery had expanded into one of the earliest ‘garden centres’ and local advertisements boasted of a million plants, a hundred acres, ‘eager staff eager to help’ and ‘more and better plants in greater variety than at any other garden centre’.
Little has changed in that respect; now called Hereford Garden Centre, it is still known as the best place to buy top quality growing stock in the area. The reputation of its knowledgeable and helpful staff reaches far and wide, the array of gardening products is superb and the restaurant (the first to open in any garden centre in 1971) stays true to its original philosophy of friendly service and excellent food. The real difference lies in the breadth of products available, which now includes garden furniture, gifts, cards, food, drink and, at Christmas, a fabulous festive display that draws admiring customers from many miles away.
