Camellia sasanqua
Camellia sasanqua 'Versicolor'
These autumn flowering camellias produce masses of fragrant flowers in a range of pinks from pure white to dark red which stand out against the glossy bright green foliage. The flowers are usually single but some varieties produce semi-double flowers.
These varieties are faster growing than the traditional camellia varieties and form a dense upright shrub with beautiful glossy foliage.
Ensure that they do not dry out as the buds are forming as this can cause the buds to abort. Dig in ericaceous compost before planting and feed regularly with an ericaceous feed for the best glossy leaves. On extremely cold nights it would be advantageous to provide extra protection for the plant by covering with horticultural fleece to reduce damage to the leaves.
Whereas most camellias prefer partial shade, Camellia sasanqua is best grown in a sunny position, so they are great for training on a south facing wall where the flowers can be shown off to their full potential.
