Chaenomeles, also known as flowering quince, produces most of its flowers on bare stems so the mass of flowers is easily seen.

Suitable for shaded walls it can be grown as a free standing shrub or is easily trained onto trellis. It comes in a range of colours from white through pink to a vibrant red. It also produces fruits in the autumn.

It will grow in most soil conditions except for very wet and whilst it will grow happily in shade it is also suitable for full sun. It is typically grown to 2m (6 ft) but can easily be trimmed to maintain a smaller size.

It is relatively trouble-free, with any damage done by caterpillars removed at the end of the year when it loses its leaves.

It is mainly used as a backdrop to other plants, covering a shady fence with smaller shrubs in front.
