For year-round foliage interest heucheras or coral flower are hard to beat. These semi-evergreen (keep most of their leaves over winter) perennials are easy to keep and excellent for the front of the border.
Heuchera 'Peach Flambee' is a recent introduction whose foliage changes through the year; starting off in spring as a red leaf with apricot tinges, the apricot colouring becomes more intense as we go through the summer then changes to purple over the autumn and winter period. During spring it produces small white bell-like flowers held above the plant.
Like other heucheras it remains small, about 20cm (9”) although the flowers extend above this to 45cm (18”). It is easy to grow preferring full sun to partial shade in soil that does not waterlog. It is seldom affected by pests or diseases.
New varieties are steadily being introduced with different leaf colouring and extents of leaf ruffling. Try planting a golden leafed variety next to a dark leafed variety to enhance the colours of each.
