Miscanthus
Miscanthus 'Ferner Osten'
At this time of the year, ornamental grasses are looking fantastic. The taller growing miscanthus produces fantastic plumes in late summer through autumn.
One of the most popular varieties is miscanthus zebrinus - the zebra grass which produces golden bands across the leaves from July onwards.
Miscanthus typically grow to between 1m and 1½m (3ft to 5ft). They grow best in moist conditions even to the point of waterlogging for short periods of time.
Miscanthus are easy to grow and seldom affected by pests or diseases. They should be kept out of the worst of the winds which can damage the plumes but a light breeze adds interest with movement and sound in the garden.
They look best as a large clump ideally amongst other grasses but can be placed to the back as part of a mixed border. Use contrasting foliage to make the best of your display.
