Schizostylis coccinea 'Jennifer'

Schizostylis, also known as the kaffir lily, is an easy to grow perennial which produces almost evergreen sword-like leaves and masses of flowers in September and October.

Although the majority are strong reds, the pale pink flowers of Schizostylis coccinea ‘Jennifer’ are larger than the original parent. These flowers, which last until the hard frosts, provide some much needed colour.

It loves moist areas in full sun but can also be grown in a pot, which by bringing into a greenhouse can extend its flowering period into the winter. It is fully hardy although some of the flowers may be damaged by a severe frost.

Growing to between 45 and 60cm (1½ - 2 ft) it is ideal for the middle of a border or in a moist area next to a pond. It can even be grown as a marginal plant.

Being a late flowering perennial, it finishes off the colours of a cottage garden taking the colour over from where crocosmia left off. It can be mixed with ornamental grasses as the foliage will match whilst the flowers will provide the interest.
