Our Guide to Growing Potatoes

Potato Varieties

Potatoes are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours, flavours and textures. They are classified according to how long they take to mature: first earlies take 9 weeks, second earlies and salad potatoes take 12 weeks, main crop take 14 weeks.



First Earlies

Arran Pilot

- Long oval tubers with white flesh. Good for baking.


Pentland Javelin

- Lots of short oval tubers. Good for boiling.


Maris Bard

- Very early with white skin and flesh. Good for boiling.



Second Earlies

Nadine

- High yield with creamy flesh. Boil or roast.


Maris Peer

- High yield of short oval tubers. Boil or make into chips.


Wilja

- High yielding long oval tubers. Boil, mash or chip.



Main Crop

Cara

- High yielding large oval tubers. Good for boiling and salads.


King Edward

- Oval tubers with a floury texture. Roast or mash.


Maris Piper

- High Yielding with a floury texture. Bake, mash or chip.



Salad Potatoes

Charlotte

- Yellow skin and flesh. Good for salads.


Pink Fir Apple

- Pink skin, creamy flesh and unusual flavour. Good for boiling.


Juliette

- High yielding long oval tubers. Good for salads.
